Grassroots Foundation
House League Development
Our revamped House League Development program brings together the fun of playing with friends and purposeful opportunities to learn. Players can enjoy soccer in a welcoming environment while building the skills and confidence that help them participate more fully in the game.
Fun With a Development Focus
Learning is introduced through enjoyable activities, plenty of time with the ball and small-sided games. Players practise new skills and then explore how to use them during play.
The focus includes:
- Becoming comfortable dribbling, stopping and turning with the ball.
- Learning to pass, receive and shoot.
- Developing balance, coordination and movement skills.
- Sharing the ball, finding space and working with teammates.
- Building confidence to try something new without fear of mistakes.
Activities should match the players’ ages, experience and stage of development. For younger beginners, this means playful exploration and simple instructions. As players become more comfortable, activities introduce new challenges while keeping enjoyment central.
A Positive Start
Success means players are joining in, making friends, becoming more confident and wanting to return. House League Development is a valuable soccer experience in its own right and can also introduce players to further development opportunities.

Recreation
Select Program
Our Select program gives players moving beyond house league an opportunity to experience more focused development while retaining the enjoyment and friendships that brought them to soccer. It is a chance to explore a greater challenge and discover whether they would like to pursue the next stage.
Building on House League
Players receive additional opportunities to strengthen technique, understand team play and apply their learning in games.
Development focuses on:
- Improving first touch, dribbling, passing and finishing.
- Looking up and recognizing teammates, opponents and available space.
- Learning when to pass, dribble or shoot.
- Understanding basic attacking and defending responsibilities.
- Growing in confidence, teamwork and independence.
Winter Funino/Futsal
During the winter, our Select teams play futsal. Futsal is a form of indoor soccer played on a hard court with a smaller, low-bounce ball.
The tighter playing space encourages players to control the ball carefully, support teammates and make decisions quickly. Frequent changes between attacking and defending create opportunities to practise awareness, movement and problem-solving.
Futsal helps players develop skills they can bring back to outdoor soccer while enjoying a lively and engaging winter playing experience.
Exploring the Next Step
Select provides a bridge for players considering Rep Development. Progression depends on interest, readiness and suitable opportunities, with continued enjoyment remaining an important part of the decision.
The Hearts Development Journey
Rep Development Program
Developing Skills and Game Understanding
Our Rep Development Program provides focused training for players ready to deepen their skills and understanding of soccer. The approach draws on Ontario Soccer’s age-appropriate development principles, helping players become more capable, confident and independent.
Learning Through Practice and Play
Training combines technical activities, small-sided games and realistic soccer situations. Players learn how to perform a skill, recognize when it is useful and apply it under increasing pressure.
Key development areas include:
- Technical ability: Ball mastery, first touch, passing, receiving, dribbling and finishing with both feet.
- Game understanding: Scanning, finding space, supporting teammates and making decisions with and without the ball.
- Attacking and defending: Learning individual responsibilities, working with teammates and reacting when possession changes.
- Physical development: Age-appropriate balance, coordination, agility and movement.
- Personal development: Confidence, communication, concentration, resilience and respect.
Appropriate Challenge
Younger players build their foundations through FUNdamentals-based learning, with more advanced grassroots players developing their understanding through Learn to Train principles. Activities and expectations should reflect each player’s age, experience and readiness.
Players benefit from experiencing different roles and solving problems on the field. Development should recognize differences in growth and learning pace rather than treating early physical maturity as a measure of long-term potential.
Recognizing Progress
Progress includes better control, improved decisions, greater involvement in play and the confidence to apply new skills. Match results are only one part of the experience.
The program helps prepare interested players for the demands of Competitive / Rep soccer as they become ready.
The Hearts Development Journey
Competitive / Rep
U14 and Older
Our Competitive / Rep pathway is for players aged U14 and older who are ready for a greater commitment to training and team competition. It combines continued individual development with the responsibilities of contributing to a team.
Developing the Complete Player
The approach reflects the ongoing development and participation principles of Soccer for Life, which includes competitive soccer as well as recreational play.
Development priorities include:
- Applying technical skills consistently under pressure.
- Reading the game and making quicker, more effective decisions.
- Understanding positioning, team shape and connections between playing roles.
- Coordinating attacking, defending and transitions.
- Developing fitness appropriate to age, growth and playing demands, with attention to recovery.
- Building leadership, resilience, communication and accountability.
Commitment and Teamwork
Players are encouraged to prepare for sessions, communicate availability, respond constructively to feedback and support their teammates. Training should challenge players while maintaining a respectful environment where learning continues.
The aim is to compete with purpose while continuing to improve individual ability and collective understanding.
Finding the Right Challenge
Team placement and opportunities depend on readiness, commitment, available teams and the applicable competition requirements. Families should consult the current program information for active age groups, assessments and seasonal details.
A Path That Fits the Player
Players do not need to complete every stage in a fixed order. Remaining in house league or Select is a positive choice, and moving into a more demanding program should reflect the player’s interests and readiness.
